What impact has music had on your life? For most of us it connects us to memories, places and people like nothing else. We’ve all had that experience of hearing a song that immediately transports us back in time to a particular holiday or reminds us of a particular point in our life.
The feeling of playing music together takes this to a whole new level. Even professional musicians who’ve been doing it for decades will still look forward to each opportunity to connect with their fellow musicians and audiences. So why shouldn’t everyone, regardless of experience or ability, have the chance to feel that? And more importantly - to learn from it.
All In Good Time was founded back in 2013 when Jason Tebble a professional bass player, having recently moved to London in order to further his music career was staying with his sister, Rachel Hale, an Operations Director in the hospitality sector, who’d made the same move a decade earlier.
Over a morning cup of tea Jason had said:
“How cool would it be if we could get any group of people, with no musical experience at all, to be able to play in a band together! Not only would it be a memorable and engaging experience, but it could also offer powerful insights into teamwork and collaboration”.
Rachel agreed but questioned whether it was even possible!
Fast forward a few weeks and a group of Rachel’s very unmusical neighbours (no offence intended) gathered in her living room with a drum kit, bass, a couple of guitars, a keyboard and some microphones. The result? Within half an hour they were playing a convincing rendition of Florence & The Machine’s ‘You’ve Got the Love’.
Jason & Rachel had come up with a system that allowed non musicians to quickly learn enough on all instruments to be able to play together. The speed at which this is accomplished then allows real freedom to start to explore the dynamics of playing together and what it means to be a successful band (ergo team).
Through various challenges and processes the experience builds towards a full-scale performance, but the real impact comes afterwards. Through structured reflection and debriefing, teams leave not only with a sense of achievement, but with clear, practical insights they can take back and apply within their organisations.
If you want your team or leaders to create more impactful team cultures, build psychological safety, know how to challenge and support each other at a high level, encourage experimentation and creative thinking and also build bullet proof levels of trust and respect for each other.. the answer is simple, give us a call and get them playing music together.
From our beginnings in that living room 10 years ago we’ve travelled all over the world delivering these innovative workshops to teams and leaders from HSBC, through to Technicolor, Aviva, GSK and many more. Now it’s your turn!
